Shahbaz Gill claims torture in police custody; plea to extend physical remand rejected




ISLAMABAD: A court in Islamabad hearing a sedition case against PTI leader Shahbaz Gill turned down the prosecution's request for an extension of his physical remand and sentenced him to judicial remand.


After a two-day physical remand, the PTI leader was brought before the court today.


Gill was arrested on Tuesday in Banigala Chowk for allegedly attempting to sow discord within the military through comments he made on a private television channel.


A sedition case was filed against him at Kohsar Police Station under several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including 124-A (sedition), 131 (abetting mutiny, or attempting to seduce a soldier, sailor, or airman from his duty), 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot if rioting is committed; if not committed), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups, etc), 

The transcript of Gill's remarks was read in front of the court during today's hearing.


General Jahangir Jadoon argued that an attempt was made to incite the army's rank and file against the leadership.


"We want to look into him further because Shahbaz Gill is refusing to give us access to his phone and laptop."


The prosecutor stated that the investigation had previously sought remand to investigate the transcript, and that they now want to dig deeper to determine who produced the programme.


"A high-profile polygraphic test must also be performed from Punjab, which will take 4-5 days. We have contacted PEMRA and may have to transport the suspect to Karachi as well "He notified the court.

During a raid on Thursday, Islamabad Police also arrested Gill's driver's wife and a relative on charges of rioting and assault on law enforcement. The police raided his driver's residence to recover his phone, during which family members resisted and "attacked." the personnel


Gill alleges torture.

Meanwhile, Shahbaz Gill claimed that he was tortured while in police custody and that no medical examination was performed.


"I cannot even contemplate speaking out against Pakistan's armed forces." "I am not a criminal; I am a professor."


Gill also claimed that he was not detained at the Kohsar Police Station.


Gill claimed that during interrogation, he was asked what former Prime Minister Imran Khan eats.


"I've been asked several times if I made these comments on Imran Khan's orders. I have made no such statement. "I'm the target of political retaliation," the PTI leader claimed.
